This course will suit beginners and more advanced writers and will cover essential aspects of both short story and novel writing. Classroom based instruction will alternate with practical writing exercises on essential components of good writing, including character, conflict, voice, point of view, theme, dialogue, setting, description, beginnings, and rhythm and sound. Students will receive handouts with examples of great writing from the Australian literature to fuel their imagination. If participants complete the homework assigned daily, they will have the draft of a short story or significant components of their novel by the end of the course.
