An Indigo vat will also be available so you can make beautiful blue and white designs or experiment with over-dyeing your naturally dyed pieces. You can expect to make an array of scarves, cushion covers, placemats, fabric bags and fabric lengths. We will then spend time fashioning simple and stunning wearables suitable for a wide variety of figure types.
A material fee of $65 per student (payable to the tutor on the first day) will cover the cost of natural dyes, Indigo, the use of shibori equipment and 2 scarves, one silk and one cotton. You can bring your own silk and cotton fabric for dyeing. You can also bring small items of clothing for Indigo dyeing such as sleeveless tops, t-shirts or cotton shirts. You need to make sure that your pieces are 100% cotton or silk and pre-washed. Rayon or Linen is also suitable to dye. Silk Habotai, Paj, Twill or Chiffon are suitable silk fabrics. Cotton lawn and calico work well for Indigo.
The following is a list of places that you can purchase silk and cotton fabric for dyeing. They also sell clothing blanks. I highly recommend you buy silk and cotton from these places as they sell fabric ready for dyeing and are cheaper than fabric shops.
These are all Australian retailers and do mail orders to any address in Australia.
I will have some silk and cotton scarves, cushion covers, placemats and fabric for sale in class.
