Bryce Courtenay
This class is structured to teach people who have already started to write a memoir, family history, novel or short story. It explores the development of character and plot and points to the common mistakes made by new writers. Participants should expect to do a fair amount of writing on their own during the course and this will be subject to instructor and group critique. Expect homework to be given every night. This course is hard work and shouldn’t be taken casually. Students should bring writing equipment and something they have written in the past.

Carrolline Rhodes
Among the many things you will learn in LIFE STORIES is what to include in your manuscript and what to leave out, how to develop a sense of audience and how to keep readers turning pages. Many wannabe life-story-authors say that they want to write the story of their lives for their grandchildren and more often than not add that they have tried and failed many times. LIFE STORIES will show you how to succeed, no matter whom you are writing for. Your readers will know what it is to walk in your shoes. The course will encourage you to discard should and will give you the confidence to embrace what if as you discover possibilities that exist beyond the conventions. It is like no other writing course you will ever attend and for many it becomes a spiritual journey, a profound discovery of self.

The world is made of stories, not of atoms - Muriel Rukeyser

Storytelling is at least as old as language. For most of our history it was the way we shared knowledge, experiences and beliefs about our world. Even now, our lives are held together by the stories we tell each other – and ourselves. We can use stories to effect real change, to realise we are not one identity, one story, but many and changing ones. We are drawn to a good story, whether a profile in a magazine, a ‘page turner’ novel or Gran’s tales of her long-ago childhood. We live our lives through stories. They are all around us.

In this course, you’ll focus on writing a good compelling story, whether as journalism or family history or autobiography or fiction. It’s all about grasping the elements of a good story and making them work in written form. This is a practical program and you’ll be encouraged to write and finish something - but the emphasis is on inspiring you, rather than scaring you witless. Highlights include publishing a camp magazine, going on writing excursions and the opportunity for private mentoring on your work. All you need to bring is enthusiasm and a willingness to send your inner critic out for a long lunch while you have some fun and try out new skills. At the end of the week, you’ll be ready (and willing, and able) to tell your story.
