Rosemary Saunders completed her teacher training and DSCM at the Newcastle Conservatorium and began her teaching career at Newcastle High School. Following a period of time teaching in Canberra, Rosemary moved to Sydney to sing with The Song Company, then under the direction of Charles Colman. After eighteen months with the Song Company Rosemary returned to Newcastle to join the singing staff at Newcastle Conservatorium. During this time she also began teaching singing at Newcastle Grammar School, an association which evolved into her holding the Director of Music position there for seven years. During this time Rosemary completed her Master of Music (Choral Conducting) degree. A highlight in this period was taking the school choir to the Internationale Chorale in Verona. In 2009 she conducted the Australian premiere of Eternal Light by Howard Goodall, with the Newcastle University Choir and Orchestra. In addition to her work in school education, Rosemary has been an active professional singer. She sings regularly with vocal quartet, Waxing Lyrical, with friends Jennifer Barnes, Paul Bevan and Christopher Allan and with the professional ensemble, Cantillation. Rosemary, currently based in Sydney, divides her time between teaching and conducting at Sydney Girls High School and a new business venture, running a coffee shop in Annandale! She has been a regular conductor of Savvy Singers for Camp Creative. The group caters for singers with some choral experience and looks at a wide range of repertoire from medieval and renaissance to contemporary works.
I was educated at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music as a Music teacher and as a performer. I taught Music in numerous private schools in Sydney, including St Scholastica's at Glebe. During my time in Sydney I was Musical Director for numerous school Musical productions. In 1989, the family moved to Norfolk Island. During that time I performed and accompanied classical singers and an accomplished violinist, Eric Craig, MBE. He was originally from New Zealand. The highlight of this time was performing at Norfolk Island's Government House.
Upon my return to Australia, I met Mr David Helfgott, with whom I have performed two piano works and duets for over twenty years now, both locally and in Sydney.
I have been the accompanist for the Savvy Singers at Camp Creative, Bellingen for approximately 15 years, which is always a highlight of each year.
