YOUR COURSE TUTOR

Jacqui Sosnowski

Jacqui is a qualified and experienced Secondary and Tertiary Teacher and has successfully taught this course numerous times around the country - even in Bellingen!

Jacqui Sosnowski is fascinated with various “alternative firing” techniques of ceramics after becoming disillusioned with traditional, shiny, glazed pottery. She is intrigued by Raku firing, and in particular, Obvara, which is an ancient medieval Baltic surface treatment, which uses only the natural ingredients of flour, yeast and water to create organic and permanent markings. Jacqui is a retired teacher, university tutor, marketing professional and now, a full-time ceramicist. She has both a Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics and works from her Studio in Mullumbimby. Jacqui has taken many workshops in alternative firing and uses her skills as a teacher and communicator to enthuse her students.

  • Alternative Firing is immediate and exhilarating.

Fired in around 60 minutes in a Raku kiln, the pots are taken from the fire and dipped immediately into the Obvara brew or placed in a reduction chamber for Raku. The results are almost instantaneous.

This is perfect for the impatient potter!

  • Please bring the following on your first day of class:

    • Student MUST bring 4-8 of their own ceramic vessels or small sculptures (grapefruit size) to fire. MUST be made from raku clay and bisque fired to 1000C

This class has an extra materials cost of $15, which is payable directly to the tutor.

Once you book your ticket, the tutor will be in touch to arrange payment.

    Cost includes:

    • All raku and obvara glaze materials

  • Suitable for everyone.

  • NOTE: THIS IS A PLAN ONLY AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE

    DAY ONE

    • Intro to Alternative Firing with powerpoint of examples of both Obvara and Naked and Glazed Raku.

    • Instructions on how to DIY your own Raku kiln.

    • Examination of students' pots and categorisation for suitability for either method.

    • Making Obvara brew.

    • Obvara Firing.

    DAY TWO

    • Glazing of Naked Raku pots (allowing to dry).

    • Raku Firing and cleaning up.

    DAY THREE

    • Glazing of glazed Raku pots.

    • Firing and clean up.

“In July, Bellingen Potters Collective had the pleasure of hosting 2 incredible workshops facilitated by Jacqui Sosnowski.
The first workshop focused on the technique of raku firing where we explored 3 different techniques- 1 step naked raku, 2 step naked raku and the glazed raku.
The second workshop introduced us to the Obvara firing technique.
The whole day was full of surprises, Jacqui was extremely professional and knowledgeable enabling all participants clear and concise instruction of each method the day ran smoothly and safety was paramount.
We would highly recommend the entire experience of immersion into raku and obvarra firing with Jacqui Sosnowski .”
