Shan Sun
My Ikebana journey began in 2019 with my teacher, Sandy Marker. Under her mentorship, I refined my skills in showcasing nature’s beauty and explored the art’s deeper meaning.
I have obtained the 4th Grade Teacher's certificate of Sogetsu school in 2024. As part of the Sogetsu tradition, each student is given a 'flower name' upon receiving their first teacher’s certificate. My flower name, 靜優 (Sei-Yu), meaning "quiet excellence," reflects my journey and aspirations in Ikebana.
I am proud to be a member of both the Sogetsu Teacher’s Association of Japan and the Australian Sogetsu Teacher’s Association (NSW). In October 2023 and October 2024, for the Japanese Lantern Festival Fundraising Dinner organised by the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour Daybreak, I had made flower arrangements for the dining tables and the reception/sake tasting desk, as well as the entrance installations at the Japanese Pavilion of the Regional Botanic Garden.
In February 2024, invited by the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour Daybreak as a guest speaker, I had given a brief talk and demonstration on the fortnightly breakfast meeting to introduce Sogetsu Ikebana to the Rotary members.
In June and July 2024, I had provided 2 complimentary Ikebana workshops for the volunteers of Coffs Coast Regional Botanic Garden, introducing the art of Ikebana. In October 2024, I have made the flower arrangement for the Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Botanic Garden.

Ikebana is a contemplative journey, inviting individuals to connect with the essence of plants, style of containers and the environment around them.
During the 5 day-course, the students will be introduced to the basic principles of Sogetsu Ikebana and get familiar with the fundamental tools and techniques. With the demonstration and guidance of the tutor, the students will be able to make their own flower arrangements of basic styles, variation styles and free styles.
The students will re-discover both the plant materials and unconventional materials seen every day and enjoy expressing themselves through ikebana.
