YOUR COURSE TUTOR

Chris Fahey

Chris Fahey is a glass artist specialising in fused art glass, dichroic glass jewellery and mosaics.
Her works are inspired by the beauty of nature and the environment in which she lives. Chris enjoys extrapolating images into abstract artworks using colour and texture to express her feeling for an object or scene.

Chris has been working with glass as an artistic medium for the past 18 years and has continually developed her skills through extensive self-education and experimentation, attending workshops and assisting fellow professional glass artists.
The art of kiln-formed glass can be quite challenging. There is real science behind the process of getting large amounts of glass to perform the way you want them to.

Chris thoroughly enjoys this aspect of glass fusing and loves the challenge of melding her initial artistic inspirations, working with the raw materials and then calculating firing schedules to realise her objective – a unique work of art.
She has had several solo exhibitions and regularly exhibits her works at local galleries, and has also participated in many collaborative exhibitions. Chris’s works are held in private and public collections in Australia and overseas.

Allan Fahey will be working alongside Chris as the assistant for this course.

  • Your starting point will be an old window frame or similar base, such as a large old microwave plate, glass chopping board or any clear glass block.

Across the week, you’ll learn how to transform these simple materials into stunning works of art.

She’ll keep it simple, helping you to create a balanced sketch, a one-of-a-kind composition as a design for your work. You’ll use this as a guideline for your creation across the week. Chris will focus on teaching key techniques, including several unique cuts and tips and tricks that she uses every day.

Chris doesn’t teach from a pattern but instead will assist you with designing your project. Her approach is to encourage imperfections and avoid judgement throughout the creative process.

By the end of the class, you will be able to create artwork without self-doubt, giving you artistic freedom and confidence in your work.

  • Please bring the following on your first day of class:

    SUBSTRATE

A clear glass substrate/base to work on, for example:

    • An old window frame/window sash

    • A large microwave plate

    • A glass chopping board

If you are unsure, the tutor can contact you to discuss further.

    • Several plastic containers to contain/ separate your glass as you work

    • Rags/cloths for cleaning your work

    • Paper and pencils/black “sharpie” etc for drawing your design/ note taking

    • If you own any mosaic tools ( mosaic cutters, glass scorer, pliers etc) please bring them with you

    • Old towel/bubble wrap etc to wrap your artwork in for ease of transportation at the end of the course

    • PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR AND COVERED FOOTWEAR ARE ESSENTIAL. If you use reading glasses then these will suffice, if not you must bring eye protection.

This class has an extra materials cost of $200, which is payable directly to the tutor.

Once you book your ticket, the tutor will be in touch to arrange payment.

    Cost includes:

    • A generous glass pack in a range of beautiful colours to the value of $130

    • The extra $70 covers shared materials including additional embellishments and treasures to enhance your project, many tubs of scrap glass, fused glass bits and pieces the tutor has made for your use

    • Glues and grouts etc and substrates for additional projects (GOG suncatcher and micro mosaic pendant)

Additional glass and some tools will be available for purchase.

  • No experience required.

  • NOTE: THIS IS A PLAN ONLY AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE
