YOUR COURSE TUTORS

Diane Chungal & Cherry Smiler

Diane is a Bunuba woman from the remote Martuwarra Fitzroy River community of Bungardi 10 km out of Fitzroy Crossing.

She was taught bush medijin and dyes from her mother and grandmother (just as they learned from their grandmothers) – and continues to teach her own grandchildren and others today.

She is well known for her skill as a language teacher, singer and bush medijin business owner.

Cherry is a Gooniyandi/Martu woman from the remote Mayada Margaret River community of Muludja 35 km out of Fitzroy Crossing.

She is a prolific textile artist – skilled in bush dyes, lino prints and textile design.

She also learned bush medijin from her old people – and continues making for the community today.

As it is wet season in January, if a tutor cannot attend, Helen Malo (on the left of the photo) from Muludja Community will come and teach.

Tutors will be supported by apprentice Kirsten Smith.

  • We teach how to identify, harvest, process and make smoking, rubbing and drinking medijins - and to put the medijin colours of Country onto scarves so you can wear Country when you are away from Country.

We capture language and culture during the course so everyone can have a booklet to take away and continue their life long learning.
