Linda Batten
I’ve been immersed in crafts for as long as I can remember—knitting since early primary school and crocheting since I was 7. I come from a long line of craftswomen. My great aunt exhibited (and won) embroidery regularly in the Royal Easter Show. My mother embroidered and knitted and made us clothes up to when I got married. My grandmother taught me to crochet, my first item being a bright aqua suit for my Sindy doll (we were too poor to have Barbies!) I made myself a beige jumper in Year 4 and wore it continually.. holes and all! I was so proud of it.
Over the years, I’ve explored all sorts of crafts, including tatting, macrame, quilling, sewing, toy making, cake and cupcake decorating (I made many wedding cakes when I was first married and, more recently, had a small cupcake business). When my children were young, I hosted craft parties, for which I made everything. My children and husband were used to having the dining room table full of half made items, ready for completion. That passion grew into teaching craft courses at evening colleges and schools, sharing skills with both adults and children.
I’ve made teddy bears (I actually made 199 and sold them all), cupcakes, handbags with interchangeable fronts, faux cactus and succulents, wall hangings and crazy tea cosies. Until recently I had a small business called Regened, which used old denim jeans and turned them into handbags, toys, doorstops and gifts.
I have sold my items at markets and online and had several exhibitions at our local pub. I love the idea of yarn bombing and decided to make some knitted and crocheted cactus to display on the main street. One of my most unexpected compliments came when a cactus I made and ziplocked to a lamppost in our main street was stolen—clearly someone loved it enough to take it home!
I have donated lots of items to our local library, not to sell, but just to give away for people’s enjoyment. My latest obsession is chooks and I have created lots of knitted chook doorstops and other chook related paraphernalia which I donate to our local hospital, knowing that a small act of craft can bring joy to someone else. I love the idea that the things I make can raise well needed funds for our local hospital.
For me, making has always been about connection, creativity and community. I love bringing ideas to life with my hands and I believe that if you have a skill, it should be shared. Creating and teaching go hand in hand, and there is nothing more rewarding than inspiring others to make something of their own.

Make an easy to complete small basket, explore the infinite possibilities of granny squares, complete a crochet cactus or succulent (perfect if you’re a houseplant serial killer) or perhaps create a simple, decorative wall hanging for your home or as a gift for someone.
If you have an alternative crochet project you’d like to complete or need some help with, feel free to bring it along. Participants will need to bring yarn and a crochet hook.
Acrylic 8 ply yarn from the discount store is perfect, as is any other spare yarn you may have left over from other craft projects. I suggest you bring a 5mm or 6mm crochet hook, depending on the thickness of your yarn. Lighter coloured yarn is preferable to dark or textured as it is easier to see your stitches.
Crocheting is known to reduce stress and blood pressure and is effective in maintaining dexterity and cognitive health as we age. Even better, it’s lots of fun. You can take it anywhere with you and it allows you to create beautiful and unique items with your hands, which is incredibly satisfying and rewarding. There is something special about seeing your finished project and knowing that you made it yourself. Crochet is faster, cheaper and easier to unpick (not that you’ll have any mistakes, of course!) than knitting and offers an incredible range of projects you can make.
It is a known fact that crocheting uses at least 32 muscles, so I make sure it is part of my daily fitness routine and now you can too! I’m very excited about sharing one of my great loves with you.
