LINDA WEIL

With over 40 years of experience as a professional artist specialising in all forms of drawing medium, but particularly graphite and colour pencil, Linda Weil is known for her engaging and detailed drawings of wildlife, nature studies and found objects.

In the past decade Linda has returned to her love of imaginative, science fiction and fantastical works.

Melding her experience as a naturalist artist with a mechanical bent, Linda’s art may reflect a steam punk vision of the world, an intricate exploration of an animal’s fur, a favourite folk tale, or the discovery of the history of a found object – all expressed through graphite with the occasional hint of colour pencil or organic stain.

Linda is represented by and exhibits regularly at Tacit Galleries in Collingwood, Victoria, as well as a variety of regional Australian art shows.

“I loved balance between structure and freedom to explore the medium from a very experienced artist and teacher.....loved it.”
— Happy Camper Review
“Linda Weil is an amazing teacher.”

  • You will create realistic drawings from supplied and your own reference photos as well as some sketching from a live animal.

Using different techniques including blending, layering, washing and line you will explore ways to create textures, surfaces and fur. And for a bit of extra fun, we will look at creating a purely fantastical creature from myth, legend, your favourite story or your imagination!

This class features step-by-step guidance, one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive workbook for you to take with you.

  • Please bring the following on your first day of class:

    • Drawing board - A3 size minimum (note, cardboard is not acceptable, it should be wood or plastic)

    • Support prop for drawing board (or you can just use a book or the like)

    • Masking tape

    • Kneadable eraser

    • Blue tack (Not UHU, white, pink or green, should be the Original Bostick Blue)

    • Pencil sharpener or craft knife and sandpaper

    • A4 visual diary (for sketching and note taking. Any type or pre used acceptable)

    • Paper stump (available at Officeworks: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/derwent-paper-stumps-3-pack-ac2300561

    • Graphite pencils, range to include: 2H, F, HB, 2B, 4B Derwent or Staedtler mars are good quality. Try to bring one brand only, don't mix your pencils.

    • Water soluble graphite pencil (Note: any brand, look for the paintbrush icon on the pencil)

    • Colour pencils- standard wax based pencils OR Aquarell (watercolour) pencils OR both. At least the primary and secondary colours. Bring what you already own, if purchasing new, speak to me first, don't waste money on poor quality pencils. Note there will be class sets available for use and trial.

    • Pental Aquash Medium round brush OR a standard round brush size 5 or 6

    • Paper: 300gsm Hotpress (smooth).  You will need approximately 4 sheets of A3 paper. One large full sheet can be cut into 4. Fabriano Artistico Hot Press (smooth) recommended

    • Tracing paper: Note this is not baking paper

    • Photographic reference material. Some will be supplied, but if you wish to draw a particular animal you need to supply your own image. This should always be a colour print of A4 size.

Please note that much of this is available through Officeworks online. If in doubt, contact Linda after booking.

    Extras if you wish:

    • Bulldog clips

    • Portable, battery-operated light source

    • Portable, battery-operated fan

    • Knife/box cutter

    • Scissors

    • Ruler

    • White cotton gloves

Suggestion for new students who do not currently own equipment, here is a great collection of pencils which has all the graphite requirements listed above. https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/derwent-line-and-wash-sketch-set-ac2302162

  • Some drawing experience is handy, but not required and all levels are most welcome.
