YOUR COURSE TUTOR

Lina Bluhm

Born in Germany and raised in multicultural Australia after moving in 1990, I have been shaped by a bilingual and richly diverse upbringing that continues to influence my life and creative work.

I hold a Bachelor of Visual Arts (2006) and a Graduate Diploma in Education (2007) from Southern Cross University. I spent seven years teaching on the Mid North Coast of NSW, where I developed inclusive arts programs and worked closely with diverse student communities.

My teaching journey then took me across continents. I spent eight years living and working in Denmark, where I built a life with my husband and our young family, including our daughter and twin boys. During this time, I worked as a Year Coordinator and Art and Design teacher, delivering the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. These international experiences enriched my perspective and strengthened my skills in curriculum innovation, student engagement, and intercultural understanding.

Now based on the Mid North Coast of NSW, I continue to combine teaching with my own creative practice. I regularly exhibit my work, including in the 2025 Incognito Art Show in Sydney, the 2019 Tiny Sketchbook Project (International Exhibition), the 2009 CPM National Print Prize at the Tweed Regional Art Gallery, Place, Identity & Memory at Gracefield Arts Centre in Scotland (2009), and the 2008 Bellingen Art Prize at Nexus Community Gallery, among others. I also run a voluntary community arts group and lead workshops in macramé, basketry, drawing, ceramics and mixed media for adults and children.

My teaching philosophy emphasises mindfulness, creativity, and connection—empowering students through self-expression and the joy of making art.

  • Themes like still life "flowers" or "mechanical" objects are explored, alongside inspirations drawn from the surrounding landscape.

The focus is on using bold colours, shapes, and patterns to encourage creativity and fun.

Throughout the workshop, students will develop key artistic skills, including shaping, toning, and refining their line work. They'll also learn to create intricate zentangle patterns and experiment with sgraffito, scratching into layers of colour for texture and depth.

The children will explore how to work with lines and shapes in diverse ways, sometimes even using their own body parts as outlines for their artwork.

By the end of the week, each child will create one main piece of artwork and a small artist book that reflects their artistic journey.

The goal is to provide a joyful, hands-on experience where children can learn, express themselves, and have fun with art.

  • NOTE: THIS IS A PLAN ONLY AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE

    DAY ONE

Students will be introduced to a variety of art materials, including watercolours, charcoal, ink, and pastels.

Through fun, hands-on exercises, they’ll explore these materials and get comfortable using them. They’ll create a quick sketch or small piece based on the theme Still Life, focusing on shapes, lines, and colours, and will experiment with different mediums.

The day will also include an introduction to basic techniques like line work and shaping, encouraging students to begin experimenting and discovering their creative process.

The goal is for students to feel comfortable with the materials and start exploring different ways to express themselves.

    DAY TWO

Students will start working on their main artwork, choosing their preferred materials and techniques, while focusing on incorporating skills like shaping, toning, and line work. They can explore themes such as flowers, mechanical objects, or elements from the landscape.

Additionally, students will begin their artist books, where each page will serve as an experiment with different techniques like zentangle, sgraffito, layering, and texture, allowing for a variety of creative explorations.

The objective is to establish the foundation for both projects, encouraging creativity and experimentation as they develop their main artwork and artist books.

    DAY THREE

Students will continue refining their main artwork, focusing on techniques like line work, toning, and adding intricate details, while also experimenting with new textures and colour combinations.

They will further develop their artist books, trying out more advanced techniques such as intricate zentangle patterns and experimenting with layering and scratching. The sgraffito technique will also be introduced, allowing students to practice this technique on one of their artist book pages or incorporate it into their main artwork.

The objective is to deepen their understanding of various techniques, adding texture, depth, and complexity to their projects.

    DAY FOUR

Students will make a final push to complete their main artwork, focusing on bringing all elements together by refining lines, adding finishing touches, and experimenting with colour contrasts or layering.

They will also continue to add and refine pages of their artist books, incorporating more detailed zentangles, exploring new colour combinations, and layering materials for added depth.

As the day progresses, students will begin reflecting on their work, considering what techniques worked well and which ones they enjoyed most.

The objective is to bring both projects closer to completion by adding the final details and enhancing the depth of each piece.

    DAY FIVE

Students will put the finishing touches on their main artwork and artist books, review and refine their work, share their creations with the group through presentations, and take part in a reflective discussion to celebrate their creativity, progress, and the techniques they explored throughout the week.
