Through a series of fun, interconnected daily sessions, you will learn how one skill naturally builds into the next, using catchy songs and tunes to put your new powers into practice.

What We’ll Cover:

  • Conquer the "Dusty Zone": Take the mystery out of playing high up the fretboard. You will master clever fingering patterns that make the upper frets feel like home. Learn to move up and down the fretboard within one tune. Many tunes will be played over the course of the week to consolidate this new skill.

  • The Magic of Campanella: Dive into this beautiful, harp-like fingerstyle technique that allows notes to ring out over each other seamlessly.

  • Demystify Chord & Melody Playing: Learn the logical mindset behind playing chords and melody at the same time, mastering chord progressions that sound spectacular. This will blend perfectly into playing two-string melody chords that easily add variety to your sound.

  • Unlock Music Theory (The Fun Way): Discover what a "Tritone Substitution" is and how to use it to give your song arrangements instant flavour.

  • Strum, Pluck & Write Your Own Hits: Learn the secrets to creating your own custom strumming and plucking patterns and get step-by-step support to kickstart your own songwriting journey—yes, you absolutely have a song in you!

  • Pro Techniques: Master the basics of the dramatic tremolo and gain ultimate control over your plucking hand.

Required skills & experience

  • The ability to read TAB reasonably confidently is required.

  • Confidence in playing common chords.

WEEK PLAN

The varying topics will be introduced in a logical and comprehensive fashion throughout the week.

The program is designed to support logical connection between one topic and the next. Development of skills across the spectrum of topics will be daily – allowing participants to steadily develop their skill base in each area of technique.

With this style of learning, as the week progresses, participants will gain confidence in connecting one skill base with the next.

COURSE TUTOR

Sally Carter

Sally performs as Sally’s Ukulele - bluegrass, Celtic, gypsy jazz, ragtime, classical, pop, jazz, old favourites, originals and folk........from fast toe-tapping tunes featuring daredevil acts of musical bravery to beautiful, soulful songs and melodies played from the heart.

Sally Carter performs on her two tenor KLŌS ukuleles at festivals, private concerts and workshops, weddings, parties and online. Sally’s shows take people on a journey through many genres, with plenty of banter and good fun thrown in!

Based in Victoria, Australia, Sally performs solo as Sally’s Ukulele, as well as in her duo, Green Fieldz. Sally regularly provides tuition for ukulele groups interested in ensemble playing, as well as teaching individually in person and online. Sally has also written five ukulele books for ensemble and solo playing. All books have tunes written in tablature, suitable for beginners through to more advanced.

Festivals Sally has performed at include: Sandford Bush Music Festival, Port Fairy Jazz Festival, Inverloch Jazz Festival, Cygnet Folk Festival, Tamar Valley Folk Festival, Melbourne Ukulele Festival, Newkulele Festival, Wirrina Cove Bluegrass and Acoustic Roots Festival, Yass Irish and Celtic Festival, Beechworth Celtic Festival and many more.
