NOTE: Please bring cash for supply costs, this will be collected by the tutor on the first day of Camp Creative.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand basic crochet terminology (e.g., chain, stitch, row, tension).

  • Identify common crochet tools and materials (hooks, yarn types, accessories).

  • Learn how to hold the hook and yarn comfortably for control and consistency.

  • Create a foundation chain with even tension.

  • Perform essential beginner stitches (single crochet, possibly double crochet).

  • Follow a simple pattern or set of written instructions.

  • Students will create and take home a scarf and a shoulder bag.

COURSE PLAN

DAY ONE

  • Introduction to crochet

  • Brief history of crochet

  • Discussion on the equipment and yarns used

  • Basic techniques needed to start a project including how to hold the hook and yarn

  • The language of crochet including terms and abbreviations

DAY TWO

  • A range of basic stitches will be demonstrated with an emphasis on the importance of tension and hook selection

  • A basic project will be commenced

  • Introduction on how to read a pattern

DAY THREE

  • Some variations on the basic stitches will be explained

  • Students will be taught how finish off, create a ring, increase and decrease stitches.

  • The method of making a Granny Square will be taught and students will start making their own as part of their final project.

DAY FOUR

  • Students will have the opportunity to learn and try some more advanced stitches

  • There will be instruction on how to make your work look professional

  • There will be time for students to work on their projects

DAY FIVE

  • How to use scrap yarn to complete a blanket

  • How to finish off projects neatly

  • There will be time to complete projects

Each day some time will be allocated for discussion on progress, successes and challenges.

COURSE TUTOR

Juliana Jones

Juliana learnt to crochet as a young girl in rural South Australia with all her siblings, including four brothers.

Her skills and knowledge have been developing ever since and she has completed innumerable projects from very fine lacework to chunky blankets.

In her role running the Fiddlesticks group, she has taught many absolute beginners whose skills have developed to the extent that they are able to produce fine quality items.

COURSE ASSISTANT

Warren Frumar

Warren has been crocheting for about three years, with Juliana as his mentor. He has completed numerous projects from simple scarves to fine lacework.

He is an active member of the Fiddlesticks crochet group and a regular contributor to Australian Men Who Knit and Crochet. Warren also has teaching qualifications and taught in the vocational education sector for many years.
