This exciting course follows the process of using a commercial gelli plate to create colourful backgrounds, botanical prints and multilayered images on paper.

The prints will be used to create art cards, mini abstract collages, journal covers and larger botanical collages.

A demonstration of how to make your own gel plate at home, how to cut and use stencils and masks, short explanation of colour mixing and colour theory, and image transfer techniques will also be covered.

NOTE: Supply costs will be collected by the tutor before Camp Creative.

Supplies that you need to bring to class

  • 8 small airtight containers (not glass) (for paint storage)

  • 1 pair large scissors

  • 1 pair small scissors

  • High gloss magazines (eg Vogue) (these will be cut up)

  • 3 Shopping catalogues (such as Coles or Aldi)

  • 1 roll blue Painter's Tape (Bunnings 24mm)

  • Lead pencils

  • Eraser

  • Pencil sharpener

  • Fabric doilies (old - they will be covered in paint) (optional)

  • 2-3 glue sticks (Bostik if possible)

  • Apron

Learning outcomes

  • Master the Gelli Plate: Get totally comfortable using gel plates to roll out vibrant backgrounds and crisp, multi-layered botanical prints using real leaves and plants.

  • Play with Stencils and Image Transfers: Get crafty by cutting your own custom stencils and using cool transfer tricks to lift images straight off laser prints and magazines.

  • Mix Up Your Media: Take your prints to the next level by adding mixed-media touches and piece them together into beautiful abstract collages.

  • Build a Finished Collection: Turn your favourite prints into a gorgeous collection of ready-to-sell art cards, custom journal covers, and large botanical art pieces.

COURSE PLAN

DAY ONE

Demonstrations followed by experimentation by students:

  • Equipment and materials

  • Single botanical image print

  • Colour mixing and simple colour theory

  • Backgrounds and layered printing

  • Stencil and mask cutting and use

DAY TWO

  • Homemade gelli plate making

  • Mixed media gelli plate printing

  • Laser print and glossy magazine image transfer techniques

DAY THREE

  • Recap the course so far and address questions

  • Creating art cards for use or sale

  • Creating small abstract collages using prints

  • Using prints on journal cover

  • Mixed media enhancement of prints

DAY FOUR

  • Recap the course so far and address questions

  • Creating art cards for use or sale

  • Continue to finalise all artworks

COURSE TUTOR

Gillian Jackson

Gillian is a retired teacher with over 40 years experience teaching primary and secondary students.

For the last 8 years of her career she taught art across the school. Since retiring she has moved from Canberra to Mitchells Island to set up a studio with a view to teaching primary students during school holiday breaks. She has a Diploma in Visual art from Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and an Advanced Diploma in Creative Product Design (CIT).

Gillian has participated in 4 major exhibitions in Canberra at M16 and Belconnen Art Centre in the last 6 years. Two of her major exhibitions included monoprints using various techniques on a gel plate. Her solo exhibitions 'Shed' and 'F103' were also well received.

She has been involved in holiday art programs for 5 years where she taught full day, topic focused courses to students K-6 including such subjects as Eric Carl collages, Picasso Heads, Cartooning, Steampunk and Escher.

Since moving to Mitchells Island she has involved herself in a short exhibition in Taree with local artists, attended classes with a local artist and joined a sketching group. She also has a degree in Mathematics and a Masters in Educational Leadership.
