WEEK PLAN
DAY ONE - Foundations of Linocut
On the first day, participants will be introduced to the Camp Creative safety and induction information to ensure a safe and supportive studio environment.
The session will also begin with a simple ice-breaker activity, inviting everyone to introduce themselves, share where they are from, and what inspires them creatively. This helps start our print community by encouraging conversation, building connections, and creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for both students and tutor.
Rachel then introduces the essentials of linocut and design.
Participants develop and carve a simple one-colour design while learning about:
The printmaking process
Tools and safe carving techniques
Archival printmaking papers
The Australian history of linocut
Rachel’s professional experience in the printmaking field
The day concludes with a group reflection and “show and tell.”
DAY TWO - Printing and Introduction to Lino Reduction
Participants print a small edition of their one-colour linocut. The class then begins designing and carving a lino reduction print.
Rachel guides students through the reduction method — progressively carving away the block between colour layers to build a multi-colour image from a single block.
The day ends with group discussion and shared reflection.
DAY THREE - Reduction Printing
Students begin printing the successive colour layers of their lino reduction print. Emphasis is placed on registration, ink handling and colour relationships.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of planning and sequencing colours in the reduction process.
Many students will produce their finished edition of their coloured lino reductions.
The session concludes with a group “show and tell.”
DAY FOUR - Confidence and Complexity
With a growing understanding of lino reduction, students continue carving and printing their reduction block, refining their control of layering, timing and decision-making.
Many participants will begin their second lino cut edition, applying the knowledge gained earlier in the week with greater independence and confidence. This second work allows students to consolidate their technical skills while developing stronger design and colour choices.
The day concludes with group reflection and “show and tell.”
DAY FIVE - Editioning and Professional Practice
Participants complete their lino reduction edition for the week.
Rachel discusses:
Proper storage of prints
Archival framing techniques
Editioning conventions
Preparing work for exhibition
Navigating the broader printmaking world
If possible, the workshop concludes with a small informal exhibition of participants’ finished works, displayed for family and friends.
Students leave with a comprehensive understanding of linocut processes and the confidence to continue carving, printing and exhibiting their work.
