Learning outcomes
Master Ensemble Timing: Develop a strong internal sense of rhythm and collective timing by playing cohesively as one unit within a traditional Brazilian Samba Bateria.
Understand Traditional Instruments: Identify and explore the unique cultural context, proper technique, and individual flavour of various Brazilian drums and percussion pieces.
Develop Rhythmic Coordination: Build advanced coordination and syncopation skills through targeted hand-drum patterns and complex layered rhythms.
Navigate Diverse Tempos and Grooves: Confidently adapt to different musical shapes, tempos, and structures, moving fluidly from structured rehearsal to open jam sessions.
Cultivate Performance Confidence: Gain personal confidence and performance presence within an energised, supportive, and collaborative group environment.

COURSE TUTOR
Kaya Boom
Kaya Boom is a multi-instrumentalist and seasoned performer having played at festivals all over Australia such as Falls, Woodford, and Sydney Festival. He has been a passionate drum teacher for over 22 years, teaching community classes, school groups, workshops and one-on-one lessons.
From the earliest of ages Kaya was called to play rhythms. Beginning on the piano and didgeridoo, Kaya had the good fortune growing up in a household rich in creativity and full of instruments. His passion has taken him on a lifelong journey into the ‘way of the drum’, exploring themes of intention, tension and integrity. He is a prolific percussionist who has spent his life learning from world percussion masters.
Kaya has a patient, caring and sensitive teaching style that is inclusive of all abilities. He is a master drummer with a unique ability to explain and breakdown rhythms, making them accessible to everyone. He facilitates drum groups that are well-balanced, respectful and non-judgemental.
