Samba Drumming Immersion

Spend a week-long immersion living and breathing rhythm as we explore the powerful energy of a Brazilian Samba School – Bateria.

This course is designed for total beginners aged 16yrs+ who are ready to dive into rhythm, groove, and musical expression. You’ll experience giant Samba bass drums, layered percussion, and the infectious feeling of playing together as one rhythmic machine.

Each Brazilian drum and percussion instrument carries its own story, flavour, and feel. Participants will learn how these rhythms connect and build into the driving pulse of Samba music.

If you’re chasing something more challenging, you can choose to explore the hand drum patterns and develop deeper rhythmic coordination and syncopation skills.

Even if you’ve never spent time working on rhythm before, you’ll come away with new musical approaches, grooves, shapes, tempos, and a stronger sense of timing and feel.

Facilitator Kaya Boom brings joy, excitement, inspiration, patience, kindness, commitment, musicality, and fiery creative flare to the experience. Kaya creates an encouraging and energised learning environment where participants can relax, connect, build confidence, and fully immerse themselves in rhythm and expression.

Required skills & experience

  • This course welcomes people of all abilities and experience.

  • Seasoned musicians will learn rhythmic phrasing and techniques that are transformative and transferable.

  • Absolute beginners will be taken through step by step and gain exciting skills and experience.

Supplies that you need to bring to class

  • Yoga mat

  • Pillow or blanket for the sound bath

  • All drums will be supplied by the tutor

Learning outcomes

  • Master Ensemble Timing: Develop a strong internal sense of rhythm and collective timing by playing cohesively as one unit within a traditional Brazilian Samba Bateria.

  • Understand Traditional Instruments: Identify and explore the unique cultural context, proper technique, and individual flavour of various Brazilian drums and percussion pieces.

  • Develop Rhythmic Coordination: Build advanced coordination and syncopation skills through targeted hand-drum patterns and complex layered rhythms.

  • Navigate Diverse Tempos and Grooves: Confidently adapt to different musical shapes, tempos, and structures, moving fluidly from structured rehearsal to open jam sessions.

  • Cultivate Performance Confidence: Gain personal confidence and performance presence within an energised, supportive, and collaborative group environment.

DAILY FLOW

10am – Samba Drumming

COURSE TUTOR

Kaya Boom

Kaya Boom is a multi-instrumentalist and seasoned performer having played at festivals all over Australia such as Falls, Woodford, and Sydney Festival. He has been a passionate drum teacher for over 22 years, teaching community classes, school groups, workshops and one-on-one lessons.

From the earliest of ages Kaya was called to play rhythms. Beginning on the piano and didgeridoo, Kaya had the good fortune growing up in a household rich in creativity and full of instruments. His passion has taken him on a lifelong journey into the ‘way of the drum’, exploring themes of intention, tension and integrity. He is a prolific percussionist who has spent his life learning from world percussion masters.

Kaya has a patient, caring and sensitive teaching style that is inclusive of all abilities. He is a master drummer with a unique ability to explain and breakdown rhythms, making them accessible to everyone. He facilitates drum groups that are well-balanced, respectful and non-judgemental.
