This series of daily workshops brings your music to life with new playing approaches, insights, and techniques to enhance and deepen your classical music experience. Through a sequence of structured group sessions, you will focus on bowing, left-hand technique, and musical development exercises. The course also dives into deep listening, expressive playing, the emotion of tone, tone production, phrasing, shifting, and intonation. Finally, you will learn how to approach different playing styles, master your posture, and practice breathing and relaxation techniques to help you feel completely at home on stage.

⚠️ Extra info: This course includes opportunities for several public performances. These performances are completely optional.

Required skills & experience

  • String players (violin, viola, cello, double bass) of AMEB Grade 4 (or equivalent level) and above.

  • Must be able to read music.

  • Course participation can be entirely seated, but students must have the mobility and stamina to meet the course hours.

Supplies that you need to bring to class

  • Your string instrument, bow, rosin etc

  • Fold-up music stand

  • Pencil & eraser

  • Notebook & pen

  • Water bottle for drinking during sessions

Your tutor will also provide links to specific sheet music required for your course.

WEEK PLAN

Each day of the 5-day course follows a carefully balanced schedule, blending rigorous ensemble work, technical masterclasses, and creative exploration:

  • Morning: Ensemble & Active Listening

    • String Orchestra Rehearsals: Intensive group rehearsals and tutorials focusing on major string orchestra repertoire.

    • Chamber Music Sessions: Small ensemble work (quartets, trios, and duets) designed to develop your listening skills and musical responsiveness.

  • Midday: Technical Masterclasses

    • Core Technique Workshops: A daily sequence of group workshops covering bowing, left-hand technique, phrasing, shifting, intonation, and posture.

    • Artistry & Expression: Deep-dives into advanced concepts, including deep listening, the emotion of tone, tone production, and adapting to different playing styles.

  • Afternoon: Creativity & Performance

    • Creative Playing Sessions: Workshops exploring expressive playing and spontaneous composition through improvisation.

    • Performance Opportunities: Regular opportunities to participate in optional, informal short concerts.

  • Throughout the Day: Rejuvenation

    • Mindful Breaks: Refreshing break sessions focusing on breathing and relaxation techniques to help you release tension and feel completely at home on stage.

COURSE TUTOR

Rupert Guenther

Rupert Guenther is a Vienna-trained concert violinist, teacher & composer.

He has worked with Vienna Chamber Opera, Australian Pops Orchestra, Beatles producer Sir George Martin, Olivia Newton-John and Greek superstar Demis Roussos. Since 2003 he has performed as a solo classical artist, independently releasing 40 original albums and tours of USA, UK and Europe.

He has taught string playing, teacher training, workshops in stage-fright, improvisation & electric strings at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama (London), Vienna University of Performing Arts, numerous international conferences and music camps. He lives in the WA wheatbelt with his wife and pet donkeys.
