Leave the course with a polished Major Work plus a booklet detailing a vast plethora of literary devices.
Have newfound confidence to share your writing and also to perform your pieces.
WEEK PLAN
Each day there are 6 clear sections:
First Rachel opens the class with a discussion on an important literary component such as: what it means to be vulnerable in your writing to truly connect; how to effectively give and receive constructive feedback; three necessary components of a creative piece, etc.
Next we explore two literary devices such as assonance and euphemisms, first defined, then modelled which you then practise in a piece of your own writing. You are then invited to share your piece with a partner and to both give and receive peer review in a gentle yet constructive manner.
After lunch, we immerse in engaging writing exercises, including: a guided workshop for achieving your writing goals; writing your Major Work; a picture tells a thousand words; writing and editing an evocative recount, etc. Daily there will be time for you to add new devices to your Major Work.
The next section is to discuss and practise a performance technique to improve confidence and charisma. We’ll explore palm cards, using a mic, voice projection, connecting with the audience, pace, pitch and breath work.
The fifth section is to perform to the group one of the pieces you have written during the day followed by the last component for the day - written appraisal from your co-writers for your performance piece.
Important note:
Daily, this course invites you to share your writing through partner work, and with the class using a mic.
This will give you confidence to share and perform your work at writers group meetings, gigs or performances. It also allows us to hear a polished piece from everyone that they have written during the day.
COURSE TUTOR
Rachel Faith
Rachel has thoroughly enjoyed teaching creative writing classes to all ages for many decades, and more recently writing scripts for children’s short films.
She delights in hosting wellness writing retreats alongside guest presenters and holistic body workers for a deep immersion in the craft. One of the highlights of her writing career – winning a trip to Paris for writing a song and singing it live over the radio (from her shower). Another was a five-day residential mentorship from esteemed author, Marele Day.
Performance poetry is a favourite gig. Rachel takes great delight having spawned a local myth in her poem, 'Bellingen’s Butcherbird Curse'.
“Rachel, your leadership is like good medicine and is inspiring, as is your 7 Senses writing workshop.”
“I was feeling more confident with my work as the encouragement that I received was nothing short of amazing. Thank you, Rachel. I want more than ever to complete what I have started with my writing - what Spirit has led me to and this is a blessing and a gift that I wish to share.”
