Wild Skills

$297.00

Wild Skills is a five-day outdoor adventure where young people learn timeless survival skills through story, games, teamwork, and hands-on experiences in nature.

Rather than teaching skills in isolation, we explore them through the natural order of survival: water, shelter, fire, and food. Each day presents new challenges, games, and opportunities for participants to work together and discover.

A core part of Wild Skills is learning through play. Large group games, sensory awareness activities, stealth challenges, teamwork, and nature-based adventures create an environment where learning feels alive and engaging. Participants will practise observation, communication, cooperation, resilience, and creative thinking while immersed in the outdoors.

Throughout the week we'll explore practices such as fox walking, wide-angle vision, sit spots, and awareness games that help young people develop a deeper connection to both themselves and the natural world. These activities encourage presence, curiosity, and confidence while fostering a genuine sense of belonging in the landscape.

Wild Skills is held by mentors Michael Connell, Mahli, and Elijah, who bring together experience in bushcraft, nature connection, movement-based learning, mentoring, storytelling, and outdoor education. Together they create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where young people can challenge themselves, build friendships, and grow through meaningful outdoor experiences.

During the week, participants will also spend time with Gawa Allan Phillips, who will join the program as a guest mentor to share stories, local knowledge, and connection to Country.

By the end of the week, participants will leave with practical outdoor skills, stronger teamwork and problem-solving abilities, expanded awareness, new friendships, and memories of adventure, challenge, and connection in nature.

Most importantly, they'll leave knowing that the natural world is not something separate from them, but something they can feel comfortable, capable, and at home within.

COURSE TUTOR

Michael Connell

Michael Connell is a bushcraft educator, nature connection mentor, and founder of Bellingen Bushcraft, based in Bellingen, NSW.

Through community workshops, immersive programs, and one-on-one mentoring, Michael creates opportunities for children, teens, and adults to reconnect with nature through hands-on learning, adventure, and traditional outdoor skills. His work weaves together bushcraft, nature awareness, storytelling, games, and practical challenges that help people build confidence, resilience, curiosity, and a deeper sense of belonging in the natural world.

Michael's teaching is influenced by the principles of Coyote Mentoring, creating learning environments that are engaging, relationship-based, and driven by curiosity rather than instruction alone. He is passionate about learning through direct experience and believes some of life's most valuable lessons are discovered outdoors through exploration, teamwork, problem-solving, and play.

As the founder of Bellingen Bushcraft, Michael facilitates youth mentoring programs, community workshops, and immersive bushcraft experiences throughout the Bellingen region. At the heart of his work is a deep respect for nature, community, personal responsibility, and the innate capability of young people when given the opportunity to learn, explore, and grow in the outdoors.

Elijah Kindred & Mahli Hawke will be working alongside Michael as an assistants for this course.

My son did the bushcraft course and had a fantastic time.
