Schedule: Mon–Fri, 9am – 4pm (5 Full-Days)

Required skills & experience

  • Students must be open to: learning, all demonstrations and being taught skills & techniques with all hand tools & some machinery.

  • You may already know some of this training, but it is important for you to be safe & know what the teacher expectations are. A safe workshop is a happy workshop!

  • Students need to be able to stand, lift to <15kg, use of walking stick ok, hearing loss ok (though teachers do not have auslan), stools will be available to sit while marking out and having a rest.

Supplies that you need to bring to class

Fabrics (please no synthetics, they don’t take to natural dyes):

  • Comfortable clothing, no skirts or dresses

  • Safety boots - definitely NOT runners.

  • Long hair tied back. Woodchix will have your prepaid bundle of all materials for your kitchen trolley.

Learning outcomes

Students will leave the course with a wealth of knowledge and skills of woodwork and their lovely and very useful Kitchen trolley from various species of Aussie hardwood with a wine rack, charcuterie board and wine glass rack which is on wheels and beautifully finished.

WEEK PLAN

DAY ONE

  • Introduction to natural dyes - discussion of samples

  • Preparation of fabrics for tomorrow’s printing

  • Essential knowledge before we begin

  • Creating sample prints using fabrics I have already prepared

  • Iron/tannin reaction, health and safety issues

  • Foraging and environmental issues

  • Recording information

DAY TWO

  • Finishing fabric prep from yesterday

  • Looking at yesterday’s samples to understand plant properties

  • Bundling

  • Printing

  • Making a weld dye pot

  • Tannin blankets

DAY THREE

  • More printing - different layout techniques

  • Demonstration of printing a garment

  • Making a cochineal dye pot

  • Under/overdyeing

  • Preparing and printing paper

DAY FOUR

  • Variations on intensity - more printing

DAY FIVE

  • Print, print, print!

  • Discussion on finishing/fabric care

  • Analysing everyone’s work

  • Final wrap

  • Examination and evaluation

COURSE TUTOR

Gill Enterkin

Gill is passionate about educating Teachers in Industrial Arts Timber and empowering women with hands-on skills in woodwork & joinery, building confidence, self esteem and preparing women to consider trade apprenticeships.

She has been a TAS (Technical Applied Studies) teacher specialising in woodwork for 20+ years in high schools. Gill is also a VET Cert IV Training and Assessment, Cert III Cabinet Making – Furniture and has a Certificate II Construction Pathways.

Before teaching, Gill worked in electrical repairs, Logistics and Transport, as a Jilleroo and in hospitality. “All of these experiences have led me to create Woodchix, in the hope that I can help teachers and women forge their paths and realise their hopes and dreams”.
