Young Makers is a visual arts course designed for children aged 8–12 who enjoy creating, exploring ideas and expressing themselves through art.

Through a range of engaging projects, participants will develop practical artistic skills while experimenting with different materials, techniques and styles.

Students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and mixed-media artworks inspired by artists, nature and the world around them. They will learn how artists use colour, line, shape, texture and composition to communicate ideas and create meaningful artworks.

The course encourages creativity, curiosity and confidence, while providing opportunities to develop observation skills, artistic techniques and personal style. Participants will be guided through projects step-by-step while also being encouraged to make creative choices and explore their own ideas.

⚠️ Extra info: Our youth courses are busy group environments led by creative tutors, not specialised care staff. To ensure a safe and positive experience for all, students must be able to follow group instructions, work respectfully alongside peers, and participate independently without constant one-on-one supervision. If your child requires extra behavioural or learning support, please contact us before enrolling so we can discuss if the course is a good fit.

Required skills & experience

  • No formal art experience is needed.

  • Participants should be able to work independently on creative projects, follow instructions, use basic craft tools safely and be willing to experiment with different art and design techniques.

NOTE: Supply costs will be collected by the tutor before Camp Creative.

Supplies that you need to bring to class

  • Lunch - Please ensure your child has a drink bottle, as well as sufficient food/snacks to get them through the day.

  • HB pencil

  • Eraser

  • Sharpener

  • Pencil case to keep materials organised

  • Old shirt, apron or art smock to protect clothing during painting and mixed-media activities.

  • Glue Stick

  • Black Sharpie texta

COURSE PLAN

DAY ONE - Sculpture, Drawing & Creative Construction

  • Welcome, introductions, icebreaker and Camp Creative induction.

  • Explore three-dimensional art through sculpture and creative construction activities.

  • Learn techniques for building, shaping and assembling artworks.

  • Create an imaginative sculptural piece inspired by nature, animals or personal interests.

  • Explore line, shape, pattern and composition through guided drawing activities.

  • Learn observational drawing and creative sketching techniques.

  • Begin developing a finished drawing or mixed-media artwork inspired by artists, nature or imagination.

DAY TWO - Colour, Mixed Media & Creative Design

  • Explore colour theory, painting techniques and creative mark-making.

  • Experiment with a range of materials including paint, collage and mixed media.

  • Create layered artworks that combine colour, texture and personal expression.

  • Complete and refine drawing and mixed-media artworks.

  • Develop confidence in making artistic choices and exploring new techniques.

  • Reflect on artistic growth and celebrate completed artworks with the group.

Danielle Corcoran

Danielle is a passionate primary school teacher with a love of creativity, hands-on learning and helping children build confidence through art. With experience teaching students from Kindergarten to Year 6, she enjoys creating engaging projects that encourage imagination, experimentation and self-expression.

Danielle believe’s every child is creative and she loves providing opportunities for young artists to explore a range of visual art techniques in a fun, supportive environment.
