Slow Stitching to Soothe the Soul
Do you love hand-stitching? Do you want to learn how this life-skill can help you individualise your garments and create embellished homewares that cost a fortune in the shops? Do you just want to indulge in a relaxing and mindful hobby?
If you answered yes, yes, and yes, then this just is the course for you. Slow Stitching to soothe the soul is delivered over 5 half days and is run in parallel with the The Ancient Art of Mending course.
If you are new to sewing, I suggest that you do Slow Stitching as well as The Ancient Art of Mending. The courses run in tandem: Slow Stitching in the morning and The Ancient Art of Mending in the afternoon. Every day you will learn new skills and be shown how to use them creatively.
We look at traditional hand-stitching skills from cultures around the world and as we progress, you will work on your own personal Stitch Journal where you can practice the skills you have learned. We start with the basic functional stitches such as running stitch and split stitch and move to more complex decorative stitches that include lazy daisy and the tricky French knot.
Come and learn how to save the planet one stitch at a time.
AGE: Suitable for ages 18 to adult
SKILL LEVEL: Everyone - Suitable for a range of experience and skill. Tutors understand that there will be varying skill levels and will adapt to the needs and interests of all students.
SCHEDULE: Half Days - Monday 13 to Friday 17 January 2025 - 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

DAY ONE
Welcome to country
Introduction to the course and general housekeeping
Equipment management
History of stitching
Introduction to sewing
Introduction to the journal
DAY TWO
Functional stitches 1: running, split, straight, back then apply stitches to the journal
We work on the journal each day of the course using the stitches taught that session. We look at techniques to transfer patterns onto fabric how to use the stitches creatively.
DAY THREE
Functional stitches 2: satin, blanket, stem, long & short
Apply stitches to the journal
DAY FOUR
Decorative stitches 1: chain, fly, seed, cross
Apply stitches to the journal
DAY FIVE
Decorative stitches 2: lazy daisy, feather, French knot, woven wheel
Apply stitches to the journal

Please bring the following on your first day of class:
Erasable pen
A variety of threads
A variety of sewing needles
Small scissors
Dressmaking scissors
Fabric scraps
Embroidery hoop (optional)
Needle threader
Needle case
Notepad
Stationery such as pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers
Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, but these will all be available for purchase at the course.

YOUR COURSE TUTOR
Suzie Wynn-Jones
Suzie has been a maker and teacher for most of her life.
She started sewing at a young age, creating and designing garments and homewares that she embellished with stitching, trims and applique. Now Suzie continues to design, construct, refashion and fix garments in her small studio in Sydney.
She makes soft toys and creative, useful items for the home. Suzie also sources and prepares high-quality second-hand clothing for sale. To create something new and beautiful, Suzie’s uses resources that are already available. Genuine sustainable practices include sourcing second-hand materials, using dead stock (excess fabrics the big companies no longer want) and creatively using whatever already existence.
Each item she makes is unique, quirky and constructed to last a few lifetimes. Some are created from scratch; some are transformed a little and some beyond recognition, but all are sustainable, beautiful and loved by their new owners.
