YOUR COURSE TUTOR
Jason John
Jason’s melding of Dr Seuss and Pam Ayres with politics, sex and religion saw him win the 2019 Bellingen Poetry Slam and place third at the Australian Poetry Slam final the same year.
Recently he has brought his extensive experience leading workshops of all kinds to poetry – running workshops for Bellingen Arts Week in 2021, Bellingen Poetry Slam Poets 2020-2025 and Camp Creative in 2023 & 2025.
He loves the opportunity to help people turn a blank page or screen into writing, then scribbles, then more writing, and the writing into words spoken on stage.
You can read and watch some of his work at ecofaith.org - or the links below.

“Jason John did a great job as tutor. He had great organisational skills and time management. He created a safe space to share and be vulnerable.”

We will put poetic pen to paper and then share drafts, sections, and completed pieces with each other.
Daily sessions will be heavy on getting stuck into writing, with a smattering of starting ideas, theory and techniques to practice. If you already have some poems, bring them along to play with if you like, as well as writing new pieces.
When it comes to sharing with the group, everything is invitational. You’re welcome to stay within your comfort zone, or try stepping out of it. If you never want to share anything, that’s ok. The only obligation is to support and encourage those who do want to share.
Students will take home a few finished poems, fragments of others, and ideas to play with in the future.
-
Please bring the following on your first day of class:
Paper
Pens
Laptop or phone, if you prefer creating on them
-
Sufficient ability to write and speak English to participate.
-
NOTE: THIS IS A PLAN ONLY AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE
DAY ONE to THREE
We will use various prompts to stimulate our writing, explore some technique which may help us tweak our poems, and share our works in progress with each other if we feel comfortable to do so.
It will be a mix of private, small group and whole group work.
DAY THREE to FOUR
We will keep writing, and add an exploration of how our poems’ layouts help us communicate with our readers.
DAY FOUR to FIVE
We might look to collect one or two poems each in an online anthology.
