This exciting 5 day course will introduce you to the Wood Lithography (Mokulito) printing process.

Mokulito can be described as “kitchen lithography”. It combines wood block printing with lithography but uses everyday non-toxic and inexpensive materials.

Sam Sosnowski

Sam has been involved in a wide range of Art and Design since graduating in Fine Art from the National Gallery School (Victoria).

After a successful career as an Art Director/Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Sculptor/and Lecturer at QUT, Sam currently divides his time between printmaking, public art commissions, fine art and teaching.

He has been involved in various group and solo exhibitions and his work is held in both national and international collections.

  • One can get the sharp lines of wood cutting with the softer and expressive tones possible in lithography.

    It is an inexpensive and portable medium that has surprising and creative results.

    Students will produce 2 edition prints over the 5 days, and come away with an understanding of the lithographic and printmaking process.

  • Please bring the following on your first day of class:

    • Sketch Pad

    • Lino cutting tools/Woodblock tools

    • Some design roughs and/or scrapbook of ideas

    • Drawing tools

    • Ruler

    • Pencils, pens. etc

    • Stanley knife or cutting blade

    • Selection of Brushes (fine and medium, wide)

    • Watercolour paint set (for multi-colour printing)

    • Mixing palette and water containers

    • Apron/old shirt for printing

    • Rags

    • Palette knives

    • Ceramic plate for mixing litho ink

    This class has an extra materials cost of $80, which is payable directly to the tutor.

    • Litho crayons

    • Liquid litho ink

    • Gum Arabic

    • Offset inks

    • Sharpening stones

    • Japanese paper/Kozo paper for 2 editions

    • High quality acid free printing paper

  • No experience required.

  • NOTE: THIS IS A PLAN ONLY AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE

    DAY ONE: Completing your design on first block

    Morning session:

    • Introduction to process and materials.

    • Demonstration videos (examples of precise and loose)

    Afternoon session:

    • Completion of design

    • Preparation of substrate for drawing

    • Sanding

    • Transferring design on to substrate

    • Application of Gum Arabic

    DAY TWO: Printing

    Morning session:

    • Soaking paper

    • Set up press

    • Mixing offset ink in preparation for printing

    • Washing Gum Arabic off plate

    Afternoon session:

    • Setting up the press

    • Printing your edition

    DAY THREE to FOUR

    • Designing second print on shina plywood

    • Carving and sharpening tools demonstration

    • Preparation for printing

    DAY FIVE

    • Printing day

    • Assessment of work
